Show & Tell: Mikaela Peters

Virginia Commonwealth University

November 23, 2021

The coneflower, a flower native to the Ozark region of the United States, typically blooms its long, drooping petals in early summer before fading away. But VCU fine artist Mikaela Peters decided to flip the life cycle on its head with her recent charcoal piece (shown above). “I wanted to document the reverse decay of a coneflower in all its stages,” she told us. It’s a positive outlook on life’s inevitable entropy, both inverting expectations and imagining a different progression for the perennial plant.
